Transformation within retail and the consumer goods industry is well underway. The main drivers are demographic change with an aging and shrinking population, rising digitalisation and increasing requirements with regard to transparency and sustainability. The consequences of these shifts are changing consumer behaviour and a need to adapt alternative business models along the supply chain. While stationary trading has stagnated, E-Commerce is growing between 10 and 15% per year.

Critical success factors in commerce is the choice of location, inventory management with high product availability, professional purchases, the design of sales floors and the specialized staff training. Retail is detail!

Stationary trading and consumer goods manufacturers are facing pressures from E-Commerce and are being required develop more innovative purchasing concepts. An increasing number of consumer goods producers are choosing their online partners more selectively. In trade, there is a shift from multi-channel retailing to omni-channel retailing. Moreover, stationary commerce, mail order and E-Commerce are becoming fully integrated and cconsolidated. The customer’s journey must not be interrupted.

Online pure players have started to open their own stationary stores or create partnerships with physical stores. Counselling certificates in stationary commerce (charges for purchase) and commission payments for stationary distributors for online purchases (by entering the zip-code) are currently being trialled.

Major trends in the space are the increasing collaboration between private label and external label businesses, growing digitalization (shopping-apps, electronical vouchers etc.), the change from the point of sales to the point of emotion, a rising demand for high-quality food and solution sales instead of products.
